History of www.EricNEK.com
It all started during the sudden emergence of having a personal website. In view that everyone have a website of their own, I registered myself to a free hosting provider. There I was, having a personal name with a geocities.com suffix. Feeling cool, I downloaded one of the most complicated web tools – Dreamweaver. I created the ugliest looking site that anyone had ever seen, and I dared to published it online. Sure enough, I shut the whole intention of having my own website a week later.
Years later, comes the trend of having a personal dot com. This has got me itching all over again. I thought, “Maybe I should give it another try, seeing that I am older now and it should be easy for me to understand the mechanism behind the whole website building thingie”. There I was, shelling out money to get my dot com and hosting services. I proceeded to give the latest version of Dreamweaver another try, thinking that it should be more user-friendly, but ended up with the same ugly looking site. A friend of mine introduced me to WordPress. Never have I thought that this software can get my site up so fast.
Setting up and customising using WordPress took little effort. It is time to see what I can contribute to the contents. I sat, for hours, thinking of a topic. Then I thought, “Should I write about my life, current issues, interesting topics, gossips or just photos?”. Seeing that I am neither a good writer nor a photographer, I know I need to share whatever I can to keep my site active and updated. Being all hyped up, I managed to squeeze out content on a monthly basis. However, it failed later, mainly due to lazism. There it was, stranded untouched for months.
Why the change in www.EricNEK.com?
As time passes, I revisited my site and realised how it has aged. It is time to give it a new face-lift and features. So, I revamped the whole site, dividing the whole site into several subsections. With the subsections, I will be able to focus more on the contents and readers will be able to choose what they want to see and where they want to visit. The contents can be offensive to some. I will post contents based on the “My site, my content. Nothing personal” motto. Discussions are allowed via “Comments” option.
Brief walk-through of the changes
Site layouts
EricNEK (ericnek.com) – This serves as the main section above the subsections.
Moments (pictures.ericnek.com) – This serves as a subsection for picture sharing.
Unveil (blog.ericnek.com) – This serves as a subsection for blogging.
Wave (media.ericnek.com) – This serves as a subsection for media sharing.
Appearance
Different themes being applied for individual subsections. Appropriate themes are picked to correspond with the contents.
New features
Navigation – This serves as a navigation pane to navigate between sections and subsections of the site.
Live updates – This serves as a notification pane for all new posts and comments from all across the sections of my site, and also my Twitter status.
Whether or not this whole new change will encourage me more to keep the site active, is a different story. In the end, it is still cool to have a dot com of my own.
